Sunshine, ice cream and a huge range of events made this year's Heage Garden Party the best one yet, according to organisers.
The 25th annual event, which took place on Saturday, raised £3,500 for Action Medical Research during the afternoon - the highest total ever achieved during the event.

Around 650 people passed through the gates at 57 Ripley Road, to enjoy the activities on offer and soak up the spring sunshine. At one point the hosts even ran out of ice cream, and someone had to be sent out to buy some more.

Jean Fardoe, who organised the event with her husband Glyn, said: "It was mega. It was the best one we've ever done. The main factor was the weather. It was fantastic.

"It was a great day. We really did enjoy it."

Pony and trap rides, a children's entertainer and a gardener's question time with the members of Ripley Gardening Club were some of the activities on offer at the event, which was opened by former England and Derby County footballer Roy McFarland and his wife Linda.

The Belper-based Folk Friendzy dance troupe provided entertainment during the day, and there was music, raffles, skittles, a penalty shoot out, and a flower demonstration.

A barbecue, cream teas and ice creams were on offer to visitors.

Jean and Glyn have been running fundraising garden parties for Action Medical Research for 25 years, after a friend's son died of a congenital heart defect at 18 months old.

Jean said: "It's a good cause and it's a social thing. It's a real community effort. Thanks to everybody."

The 25th Annual Heage Garden Party will take place this Saturday at 57 Ripley Road, Heage.  The event in aid of Action Medical Research has brought the village together in fun and entertainment year on year.

This year former Derby & England footballer Roy McFarland will officially open the event at 1pm, the fun starts from 12pm.

Children's fancy dress competition and a special appearance by Paddington Bear are just some of the highlights of this great charity event.

Scouts in Heage are suffering after a valuable piece of their equipment was stolen.

A large white trailer box was taken from the group's storage site in the village earlier this month and it is still missing.

The box was stolen between the end of April and May 19th. Security locks which were fixed to the trailer were removed and it was towed away from the site.

The police have been informed.

The distinctive trailer is signed with the Scout logo and the logo for the Heage Scout group. It was used to transport camping equipment.

Sharon Coope from the group said: "It took a year of fundraising to buy the trailer, which we can not now do until it is replaced or returned."

National Mills weekend celebrates hard work of Heage volunteers.

Last weekend Heage was one of 450 windmills which took part in National Mills weekend.

The historic 200-year-old mill, on Chesterfield Road in the village, was open for guided tours for the weekend and visitors were able to sample bread and cakes made from flour milled on site.

A lot of preparation went into the event, on Saturday, May 8, and Sunday, May 9, but it was nothing out of the ordinary for volunteers at the mill, who work to open the attraction every weekend during the spring and summer.

Volunteer Lynn Allen said: "We enjoy it. There's not a lot of people who can say they love their job, but we wouldn't do it if we didn't."

To read more on the work done by volunteers at the landmark mill buy this week's Belper News, out on Wednesday, May 19.
